30 October in Russia is the Day of Remembrance of Victims of Political Repression. The Day was first officially commemorated in 1991. This year it is being marked for the 24th time. 30 October was chosen as the day to commemorate victims of repression since on that day in 1974 camp inmates in Mordovia began a hunger strike in protest against repressions in the USSR and the inhumane treatment of prisoners.
