Viktor Kogan-Yasny

Viktor Kogan-Yasny was born in 1959 in Kharkov, and the same year his family moved to Moscow, where he has since lived. He is a graduate of the chemistry faculty of Moscow State University, where he later wrote a PhD in chemistry. Since 1989 he has taken an active part in public life, beginning as a participant in Moscow Tribune and Memorial, the Voters' Club of the Academy of Sciences and the Inter-regional Group of Deputies of the First Congress of People's Deputies of the USSR. 

In 1990-91 he was an aide to the chair of the Human Rights Committee of the Supreme Soviet of the RSFSR. Since 1992 he has been a member of the board of the Society Against the Death Penalty and Torture, which is today known as the Regional Civic Initiative - Right to Life and Civic Dignity. Viktor is one of the founders of the Memorial Human Rights Centre and is a member of its board. Since 1995 he has contributed as an expert to the work of the Yabloko political party, and is an adviser to the chairperson of the party.
