Historical memory 
On 18/12 Arseny Roginsky, chair of the International Memorial Society, died at the age of 71. (RFE/RL, 18/12)

Freedom of expression 
On 18/12 the Supreme Court of Crimea upheld a separatism conviction against journalist Mykola Semena. (RFE/RL, 18/12) 

On 20/12 President Putin signed a bill providing for fines for violating the law on Internet messengers. (RAPSI, 20/12) 

On 21/12 journalist Vyacheslav Prudnikov who works for Kavkazsky Uzel was shot in Rostov region, in an attack he linked to his reporting. (RFE/RL, 22/12) 

On 21/12 Mikhail Khodorkovsky launched a new media website after authorities blocked access to the site of his blacklisted pro-democracy NGO, Open Russia. (The Moscow Times, 21/12)

On 21/12 a Moscow court ordered Pussy Riot member Maria Alekhina to perform 40 hours of community-service work as punishment for a protest outside the FSB’s HQ. (RFE/RL, 21/12) 

On 22/12 Moscow police searched the homes of Olga Chezare, Roman Kogan, and Roman Rashimas, activists of an opposition group called Protesting Moscow. (RFE/RL, 22/12)
