Memorial's Arseny Roginsky, Who Fought To Keep The Memory Of Stalin's Crimes Alive, Dies At 71
Arseny Roginsky, a veteran activist who was chairman of the respected Memorial human rights society, has died after a life chronicling abuses and injustice in the Soviet Union and post-Soviet Russia. Roginsky died on December 18 at the age of 71, Memorial said on its website. The statement gave no cause of death. Media reports quoted friends and colleagues as saying that Roginsky died of cancer in Israel. [...]

Russia-Imposed Court In Crimea Upholds Journalist Semena's Verdict
The top court in Ukraine's Russia-controlled Crimea region has upheld a separatism conviction against journalist Mykola Semena in a case that has been criticized by media freedom advocates and Western governments. The court, which Russia calls the Supreme Court of Crimea, left the conviction and suspended 2 1/2-year sentence in place in its ruling on December 18. At the same time, it shortened -- from three years to two -- the period of time during which Semena is prohibited from working as a journalist. [...]

Dozens Of Crimean Tatars Fined Over Protests On Russian-Controlled Peninsula
Courts in Russia-controlled Crimea on December 18 fined dozens of Crimean Tatars over single-person demonstrations, in a move which Amnesty International called "a brazen crackdown." The Crimean Tatars staged the demonstrations in October to protest pressure imposed on practicing Muslims by the Moscow-installed authorities. Five suspects killed in CTO in Karachay-Cherkessia
Five suspected militants were killed in the course of the counterterrorist operation (CTO) carried out in the Zelenchuksky District of Karachay-Cherkessia, the National Antiterrorist Committee (NAC) reports. Today, at 9:30 a.m. Moscow time, the CTO legal regime has been introduced in the mountain-and-forest area of the Zelenchuksky District of the Karachay-Cherkessian Republic (KChR). The law enforcement bodies have reported that the special operation is being conducted "in order to prevent terrorist actions and minimize their consequences." [...]

Policemen report liquidation of three militants in Gubden
Today, around 8:00 a.m. Moscow time, law enforcers started a shootout with alleged militants, who were hiding in a private house of the Dagestani village of Gubden. The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that since December 16, Gubden is under the counterterrorist operation (CTO) regime. The Russian National Antiterrorist Committee (NAC) has stated the killing of three militants during the CTO in Dagestan. "In the course of the CTO, three bandits were neutralized," the RIA "Novosti" quotes the NAC's message. [...]
