Everything you need to know about last week’s elections

St.Petersburg

The municipal elections in St. Petersburg were even more scandalous than the gubernatorial campaign. Over 19 municipalities, candidates faced problems during registration due to so-called “secret elections”. As a result of this, valuable time was wasted which was necessary for collecting signatures for nominations.

The Central Election Commission (CEC) has already discussed the possibility of cancelling the elections. We too were forced to intervene: Golos demands a restoration of the rule of law, and for those responsible to be brought to justice.

Moscow

Public inspectors in the Nagorny district of Moscow, discovered a forged signature in support of a United Russia candidate. It belonged to a member of the Territorial Election Commission, so was not difficult to verifywith the commission’s documents.

How many of these cases will arise? How many objectionable candidates’ signatures can you reject? To remove doubt, Golos demands the preservation of principles of openness and transparency when verifying signatures. We have also asked Alexey Venediktov, the head of the Public headquarters of the Moscow Civic Chamber, to assist. We suggest allowing the media to work on signature verification in support of the nomination of candidates to the Moscow City Duma.

Free Election Defenders

The award committee announced the winners of the “Defender of Free Elections” award. There were 6 winners this year:

  • Aleksander Yurievich Dubov, Tver
  • Victor Vasilievich Kabanov, Moscow
  • Victor Filippovich Rau, Barnaul
  • Andrey Aleksandrovich Sergeev, Ivanovo
  • Vyacheslav Mikhailovich Chernov, Tashtagol
  • Tatyana Viktorovna Yakubova, Novy Urengoy.

You can read a little bit about each of these award winners here. It is important to know who is fighting for fair elections and for our future.
