No one is expecting a miracle from the Russian courts. No one is holding out hope for justice, objectivity, the search for judicial truth or a strict observance of criminal procedural laws. We learned long ago that the law is the taiga and the public prosecutor the bear. We live in Russia, we know how things work. But even with all our understanding of Russia's innate lawlessness, deep in our hearts we still hold out hope for adherence to, if not the law, then at least to procedural propriety.
